Una dintre cele mai ornate lucrări ale arhitectului Paul SMĂRĂNDESCU, vila Virgil Hagi-Panteli, rămasă izolată între blocuri înalte, este un martor al eleganței Neoromânescului și eclectismului din primul sfert al secolului 20. Insinuările tradiționale sunt foarte fine, rezumându-se la arce trilobate și pilaștri de proporții masive. Ancadramentele multiple, capitelurile, parapetul și friza sunt toate elemente minuțios sculptate, imprimând fațadelor textura unei bijuterii.

Remarcabil la această lucrare este balconul, aproape transformat în logie prin masivitatea pilaștrilor care îl bordează. Arcul masiv care sprijină pe cei doi pilaștri este temperat de un tirant metalic filiform. Profilaturile simple ale acestui arc, depărtându-se ca undele de sursă, se depărtează atât de mult de conturul arcului, încât sunt întrerupte de friză. 

Friza în sine are un model cu un înalt grad de repetitivitate, fără ca acest fapt să deranjeze. Acesta a fost, probabil, modul arhitectului de a-și imprima felul discret de a proiecta asupra clădirii: dacă restul ornamentelor erau atât de prezente, a ales ca friza să atragă mai puțină atenție.

Vila a fost construită de Mihail HARTEL, contra sumei de 120.000 de lei.

One of Paul SMĂRĂNDESCU’s most decorated works, Virgil Hagi-Panteli Villa, now isolated among high apartment buildings, remains a witness of the elegance of the first quarter of the 20 century Neoromanian and eclectic styles. The traditional hints are very refined, consisting of trefoil arches and massive pilasters. The multiple window frames, the capitals, the parapet and the frieze are all carefully carved, leaving the impression of jewelry-like texture.

The balcony is a remarkable feature here, as it is almost completely transformed into a loggia through the mass of the two pilasters that border it. The massive arch that rests upon the two pilasters is balanced by a thin metallic thrust. The simple profiles of this arch, running away, like waves from a source, intersect the frieze.

The frieze itself has a highly repetitive motif, without becoming bothersome. This was probably the architect’s way of imprinting his discrete manner of designing: since all the other ornaments were so strong, he chose that the frieze would be less conspicuous. 

The villa was built by Mihail HARTEL for 120.000lei.
